A Partner with the United Way

The Youth Department offers several exciting opportunities for Youth Volunteers. Youth Volunteers are typically between the ages of 14-24 but there are also positions available for adults who wish to work with youth. Read about the different ways to get involved

Community Disaster Education (CDE)

CDE presenters have extensive training in how people can prepare for and respond to emergencies.  They use this information when delivering entertaining and informative presentations to audiences throughout the county.  Most of these presentations will be at schools or youth groups.  Topics frequently covered include earthquake safety, flood safety and how to put together a disaster kit.  It is a great chance to work with younger kids.

Skills Developed:  Public speaking, working with youth.

Training Required:  First Aid, CPR, Introduction to Disaster Services, CDE Presenter's Workshop

Time Commitment:  A minimum of four presentations during the year.  Scheduling is flexible.

Community Visibility Events

As a community organization, the Red Cross participates in fairs and festivals.  Volunteers are needed to staff our booths and provide fair-goers with basic information about the Red Cross.  These events are also a great chance to recruit new volunteers.

Skills Developed:  Public speaking, working with diverse populations.

Training Required:  First Aid, CPR

Time Commitment:  A minimum of 2 events during the year.  Events are typically, but not exclusively, on weekends or evenings.

First Aid Workshops for Youth

Volunteers at first aid workshops are responsible for teaching young people basic first aid skills.  Workshops take place at the Red Cross chapter, where volunteers teach groups of 20 kids who are 7-9 and 10-12 years of age.  Topics covered include water safety, CPR, sprains and fractures, and many others.  The workshops are a fun opportunity to work with kids while practicing your teaching and public speaking skills.

Skills Developed:  Public speaking, working with youth

Training Required:  First Aid, CPR

Time Commitment:  A minimum of 2 workshops during the year.  Workshops are on Saturdays and Sundays.  6 are scheduled for the 2003-2004 school year.

Health Services Instruction

The Red Cross Health & Safety Department offers reduced-cost classes to non-profit organizations and other groups that otherwise could not afford first aid, CPR, and HIV/AIDS training.  To do this, they rely on volunteer instructors.  By becoming an instructor, you can teach important life-saving skills to the community, in addition to developing your own teaching skills.

Skills Developed:  Teaching, public speaking, working with diverse populations

Training Required:  First Aid/CPR/AED and/or HIV/AIDS Instructor training

Time Commitment:  Minimum of 4 classes during the year.  Could include First Aid Workshops for older kids.

First Aid Stations

Working at First Aid Stations involves providing first aid care at community events such as Bite of Seattle, the St. Patrick’s Day Dash and the Fremont Fair.  Many of the situations we respond to are fairly minor—scrapes, bee stings, and dehydration.  However, there are times when more serious incidents occur and volunteers are called upon to give emergency assistance until more advanced medical professionals arrive.  First Aid Stations are a unique opportunity to practice first aid skills and provide patient care, while being a visible Red Cross presence throughout Mower County.

Skills Developed:  First Aid skills, working with people from diverse backgrounds, client care.

Training Required:  First Aid, CPR, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, HIV/AIDS, radio procedures.

Time Commitment:  Minimum of 3 first aid stations during the year.  Stations are typically operated during the summer months.

Office Support

The Youth & Young Adult Services program is always looking for volunteers who can provide regularly scheduled office support.  This could mean coming in once a month to enter volunteer hours, or once a week to copy supplies for classes and workshops.  Special projects also come up on a regular basis.

Skills Developed:  Computer skills, organization.

Training Required:  None

Time Commitment:  Flexible
