EXAMPLES OF SCHOOL PROGRAMS:
Disaster Presentations:
These presentations are offered free
of charge and can be provided to students of any age from pre-school through
high school. Most presentations are designed for 10-30 students and are
tailored to meet the needs of the particular audience. Students will learn how
to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters. Activities are built into the
presentations to make them fun and interactive for the students.
Materials:
The following materials are available
for purchase through the Red Cross.
Scrubby Bear:
Scrubby bear is a collection of
lesson plans for Kindergartners to learn about germs and proper hand washing
techniques. Through stories, activities and even a clean hands club pledge card,
kids have fun while learning, “don’t get sick, wash up quick.”
First Aid for
Children Today:
F.A.C.T. (First Aid for Children
Today): Designed for first through third grade, F.A.C.T. lessons teach kids to
respond to basic emergencies. Kids also learn about healthy living habits,
stranger safety, injury prevention, and road safety.
Basic Aid Training:
Basic Aid Training, (B.A.T.):
Designed for fourth through sixth grade, BAT teaches kids how to prevent and
respond to emergencies. Topics covered include, fires, burns, choking, rescue
breathing, poisoning, water safety and falls.
Masters of
Disaster:
The Red Cross offers curricula
for teachers that are easily incorporated into existing lesson plans. The
curricula are designed to meet school standards in areas of geography, math,
science, and other subjects. The main curricula entitled Masters of Disasters
combines activities, games, and even videos to supplement lessons on different
types of disasters. Students learn not only about their academic subjects but
learn about disaster safety along the way. The curriculum is offered for grades
K-2, 3-5, and 6-8.
Facing Fear:
Another curriculum that is
offered by the Red Cross is Facing Fear. This curriculum came out in
response to the September 11th attacks in 2001. The lessons focus on
helping kids face their fears regarding not only terrorist attacks, but any
frightening event in their
community. These lessons can be
incorporated in the aftermath of an earthquake, a death in the school, or any
tragic event. This curriculum is also offered in K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 components.
