Emergency Messages During A Disaster (Disaster Welfare Inquiries)

In addition to providing services to disaster victims detailed in Services Overview, the American Red Cross is also there for concerned family members around the country. After a disaster occurs, people are often forced from their homes, communications may be disrupted, and families may be separated. Family members outside of the disaster-affected area may not be able to reach their loved ones. When familiar communication systems are interrupted as a result of a disaster event, the American Red Cross, accessing their network of chapters all across the country will make connections between those affected by a disaster and their family members in another area. Local family members who are concerned about loved ones in an area of the country recently affected by a disaster can call us at (507) 437-4589  and request assistance in determining the well-being of their family member.

Armed Forces Emergency Services

As part of the 1905 Congressional Charter, the American Red Cross was designated as the official communication agency for the Department of Defense.   Armed Forces Emergency Services at the Chapter are available for military members and their families.  We're available for their emergency needs - around the clock and around the world.

When disaster strikes in the United States, the American Red Cross will try to determine the welfare status of family members who have lost communication with each other.  Families can call us at (507) 437-4589  to initiate a Disaster Welfare Inquiry.  For more information, check out our Military Assistance page.

When normal communications in other nations are disrupted by war, conflicts and other disasters, the American Red Cross relies on the network of the more than 170 National Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies and the rest of the International Red Cross movement to bridge that gap.  Whether it's exchanging Red Cross Family or POW Messages, tracing a missing loved one or making an International Disaster Welfare Inquiry, our Chapter is here to help.

International Disaster Welfare Inquiry

International disasters can result in a loss of communications between loved ones in different countries.  Our staff will assist in locating people in areas of disaster around the globe.  Our International Services page will provide more detailed information.  If you wish to speak directly with someone about locating someone internationally, call us  by telephone at (507) 437-4589...
