What does
Transportation Services do? Many
chapters provide transportation to and from medical
appointments and other essential trips for people who
cannot provide their own transportation. This service is
normally provided to seniors or persons with chronic
illnesses, such as dialysis patients or persons with HIV
or AIDS. Back

How can I get
involved with my chapter's Community Services
programs? Volunteers are essential to
Community Services programs. Many chapters are looking
for volunteers to visit homebound seniors, drive people
to and from medical appointments, deliver mail,
newspapers and flowers to patients at local hospitals,
package food for those in need, translate a conversation
for someone with limited English and much more. Contact
your local
American Red Cross chapter and ask about current
volunteer opportunities. Back

What types of
Community Services do American Red Cross chapters
provide? American Red Cross chapters
provide locally relevant humanitarian services that help
targeted groups within the community be safer, healthier
and more self-reliant. Community services are as varied
as the chapters that offer them. Some program examples
include:
- Senior services -- friendly visitors, caregiver's
support
- Hospital and nursing home volunteers
- Lifeline® -- an electronic personal emergency
response service
- Transportation to medical/doctor's appointments
and other essential trips
- Food pantry and hot lunch programs
- Homeless shelters and transitional housing
services
- School clubs and community service learning
programs and projects
- Youth programs -- violence and substance abuse
prevention, peer education and mentoring, leadership
development camps
- Food and rental assistance
- Community information and referral
Chapters determine which programs to offer based on
their community's needs. Many chapters offer one or more
Community Services. Back

Why do some
chapters offer some Community Services programs and not
others? Community Services programs
are offered based on the community's needs, financial
resource availability, and the chapter's ability to
provide the service. Some chapters focus exclusively on
traditional American Red Cross areas such as Disaster,
Health & Safety, Armed Forces Emergency Services and
International Services. Every chapter does not offer
Community Services programs, though most chapters offer
one or more programs. Contact your local American Red
Cross chapter and ask about their Community Services
programs they may offer. Back
